Day 6: From Atka Bay to Novolazarevskaya Station

December 9th, another day we were able to fly our four aircraft over 700 kilometers across eastern Antarctica. What seemed an ambitious plan in the morning transformed into a successful day of good progress.

Current Location: Novolazarevskaya Station

Day Events

After a windy start near the famous penguin Colony, Atka Bay, Neumayer station set the tone for starting a great day, they swiftly cleared a runway battered by recent storms and processed our refueling with remarkable efficiency. After departure from Neumayer and almost 2hrs. of flight, Troll station followed suit, providing equally crucial support that allowed us to maintain our momentum. Their collaborative approach ensured we could continue our journey without an overnight stop, turning a complex challenge into a smooth transit.

By 10 PM, we had navigated from Atka Bay through Neumayer and Troll stations to our current location at Novo. Now synchronized to UTC and strategically positioned, we’re prepared to seize the next favorable weather window. Our upcoming leg to Princess Elizabeth station—the Belgian research base—signals we’re approaching the final stages of the DROMLAN segment.

Current Progress.
