Day 21: Progress > Mirny Station

After four enriching days at Progress Station, our Russian hosts bid us farewell as we embarked on our flight to Mirny.

Current Location

The journey proved remarkable, featuring a special stop at the distinctive Gaussberg Volcano, which offered us new perspectives of Antarctica’s diverse landscape.

Upon reaching Mirny, station leader Igor Savva welcomed our team warmly.

This Christmas will remain etched in our memories, as the Progress Station team embraced us with extraordinary hospitality. The festive atmosphere, despite being far from home, reminded us that the Antarctic community is truly a family of its own.

We’re currently monitoring a frontal weather system, waiting for conditions to clear before continuing our eastward journey. Our next destination is Law Dome, where we plan to establish a camp for the night before pressing onward.

This leg of our expedition continues to demonstrate the vital role of international cooperation in Antarctic research, with Russian stations providing crucial support for our scientific mission. The team remains poised to take advantage of the next favorable weather window.
